Steve Young was one of my earliest students in the 1960s in Boston, and a very special student indeed! We quickly went beyond the teacher/student relationship to become colleagues and life-long friends. He was the personification of "irrepressible", always positive, always helpful, always accomplishing things.
We saw each other very little during the past 35 years, but through his arrangements for bassoon ensemble and my many fond memories, he was never far from my heart and mind.
To his family and friends I send my sympathy and condolences.

I am very saddened by the sudden passing of Steve
My condolences to all the family members and friends of Steve
I am a profession bassoonist here in Boston , I knew Steve through his years here in Boston
He was wonderful musician , with a beautiful bassoon sound, I was always inspired hearing him perform with the Budhist bassoon quartet. He could play all styles of music with ease and mastery
I also worked with Steve as a member of the Boston Ballet committee . He was president of the Boston local back then, and I saw how well he worked with other people, and negotiating in behalf of us musicians
Thank you Steve for all you did for us musicians, you will be remembered and we will miss you

To the family of Steve Young
Please accept my sincere condolences. I have taken comfort knowing that God . . . will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain.”—Revelation 21:3, 4
The Bible, however, holds out a much different hope. As we have previously noted, the Scriptures indicate that it is possible to be reunited with your dead loved one in the near future, not in an unknown heaven but right here on earth under peaceful, righteous conditions. And at that time humans will have the prospect of enjoying perfect health, and they will never have to die again. ‘But surely that is wishful thinking!’ for some may say. For words of encouragement please go to JW.org
Sincerely,
Roberta

I'm shocked by the sudden passing of our colleague/comrade. I did not know Steve well, but when I was elected to State Council 4 years ago he was most welcoming and was always willing to provide good counsel when I needed guidance on key issues. Wish I had known him better and had gotten to hear him play the saxophone. Can't imagine going to the next State Council meeting and not seeing him up there on the podium.....

I am so deeply saddened by Steve Young’s passing. He was a consummate professional and a genuinely lovely person. Steve taught me so much about union activity and negotiations in particular. I looked to him for help and guidance because of his experience and intelligence, and his moral compass that always pointed true – he taught me to never lose sight of why we do this work and for whom we do it. Thank you Steve for everything. You will be sorely missed. Would that we could share just one more glass of fine (or not so fine) wine.
I send my heartfelt condolences to Steve's family.

I was very shocked and saddened to learn of Steve’s sudden passing. He was a fine AFM President and a very down to earth human being. His later work with the AFT was exemplary. He had a wonderful sense of humor but very focused on all his work. We will all miss him very much.

To the Young Family
My heart is so sadden in the sudden passing of my friend and your father, Steve. He was a wonderful and caring person. As an Administrator in the College of Education at Rowan University and a Senior Adjunct Professor in The Department of Political Science, I worked with Steve as the COPE (Committee on Political Education) for the AFT 2373 Union. He was brilliant and wanted the best for everyone.
May he be Blessed by our Lord in Heaven.

Our thoughts and love go out to you Oliver, Gina, & Audrey. Steve's sisters & family are in our thoughts also. Steve was a great brother-in-law, and I was so happy that he was part of our family. He shared advice to me many times when I was receiving my music degrees. Steve in fact, gave me my first instrument (flute) when I started playing in band. I was so thankful to him for being such a great husband to Karen, and I know he is with her now. Thank you, Steve. We will miss you dearly. Rest in peace.

I met Steve through AFT. He was always very kind to me. He wrote a recommendation that helped me get an organizing job I love. He talked me into going out to enjoy some live music instead of staying in my Pittsburgh hotel room like a stick in the mud. I talked to him about my love of New Mexico, and he bragged to me about his granddaughter. I’ll miss my friend. His family has my deepest sympathy.

We are so sorry to hear about Steve's passing.
Although he only had one year at the helm of the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, he stayed on as a board member for a long time. He is a great supporter of the arts.
We come across each other after he went back to NJAFM.
Only learned about his passing from the college union notice.
Our deepest condolences.
Rest in Peace.

When I was active in the AFM, Steve was President the musicians’ union. When I became active in the Kean Federation of Teachers, Steve was appointed Executive Director of the AFT State Council. In every interaction I had with him over the years, I found him cheerful, friendly, and deeply concerned for the welfare of his constituents. I was always impressed by his decency, intelligence, and common sense. He was a classy guy and I am saddened by his early death. I hope his family and friends take some comfort in knowing that he helped a lot of people who will remember him fondly. Anthony Scelba, Professor, Kean University, and fellow resident in Woodland Park.

Steve and I first crossed paths at the 1987 International Convention of the AFM. I was raising rabble, and he was running for the International Executive Board. Neither of us got quite as far as we intended that year, but events in the musicians' union unfolded before us nevertheless. By 1991, I was elected to the Board for the first time, and Steve had mounted a successful challenge to become International Vice President. The next four years were exciting, collaborative and creative ones at the AFM - and silly. Our then-president had a habit of fining us board members $5 if we were late getting to a board meeting. As Steve, I and a colleague were heading back to a meeting after a lunch break, we all simultaneously realized that we were about to be late returning and broke out into a headlong run down the hall for the meeting room, lest we be fined. However, I stumbled on a wrinkle in the carpet, our colleague crashed over a waste can, and Steve rolled ankles-over-teakettle off to the side of the hallway with a thud. I limped into the boardroom, and our colleague tottered in rubbing his shins, both of us sheepishly handing over our $5 fines. Steve came in one very long minute later with his trademark sly smile - "I have an excuse!" he declared. Holding up one penny loafer shoe for all to see its side split open and missing heel, he said, "I had a blowout."
"Not guilty due to extenuating circumstances," ruled the president.
Those are the kinds of moments I remember about Steve over the twelve years that we served together - funny, impromptu, creative and light. He carried a very serious and determined work ethic with him, but rarely at the expense of having a good time.
My condolences to his sisters, son, daughter-in-law and extended family.

I had the privilege of being advised by Steve when I serve as president of my local KFT 2187. After serving in this capacity, he continued to provide a steady guidance to all of us who serve in the state council. What I will miss more about Steve is his smile, wisdom, humor and his commitment to our labor movement. My deepest sympathy to his family and his colleagues in the NJCSCL.

Steve was such a devoted union leader and member of the American Labor Museum. This past November, there was a storm that crippled the entire state of NJ. It was on the night of the museum’s biggest fundraiser. Steve called to say he was going to try to make the event. I told him how much I appreciated it, but to stay home. People were stranded on too many roads. It wasn’t worth endangering his life. I bring this up because it truly represents how loyal he was. I will always remember his gentle spirit, warm smile and belief in social justice. Steve was a friend whom I will forever love and remember.

From the perspective of the Council staff, Steve was the ideal supervisor. He valued collaboration over conflict and always respected the opinions and wishes of the staff. He never raised his voice or pulled rank. He allowed the staff the autonomy to do their job as professionals and provided assistance and guidance whenever asked. If a staff member had a problem, he would make every effort to resolve it. In particular he understood the needs of the staff to balance their work and home lives--up to and including allowing pets and children to visit on occasion.
We all thank Steve for creating a warm and friendly work environment.

I’m so sorry for your loss. The bible is so true when it mentions “the sting of death”. Death is truly painful for family and friends. The God of the bible Jehovah says he's going to “swallow up death forever and bring back to life on earth all those who have died in his memory” (Isaiah 25:8). This scripture has given me comfort and I pray you receive comfort from it also.
