Clare and Jack May
Merise Nelson appeared in Montclair in 2008, and joined the Montclair College Women’s Club. She planned creative events for them, a dinner party at a local garden, a museum curator looks at art quilts, CASA explained, a club bridge group, etc., and she served as the club co-president with Linda Stark for several years. She helped with the twice yearly used book and music sales, which raised money for scholarships for area girls.
Subsequently she pursued her interest in bridge with lessons, playing in local bridge groups, managing a once a month Games Day for the Upper Montclair Women’s Club for several years, and playing in a competitive game at the Upper Montclair Golf Club. She was a gourmet cook and did elegant meals.
She loved mystery books, and more erudite books as well. She enjoyed several book clubs over the years.
She was a lively lady and we will miss her bright presence.

Merise Nelson was a fixture in the Westhampton Summer House scene. In her usual elegant style, she would coordinate the adult summer camp, with parties, dinners and social events.
Merise would gather all of our friends for the celebration of just about every holiday that should or could be celebrated. The highlight being a weekend gathering that began at Westpoint for a tailgate and football game, that continued to a superb dinner in a magnificent country restaurant and ending with brunch and a tour of one of the mansions along the Hudson River.
She had a beautiful design sense; personally and for homes. You can count on Merise’s suggestions whenever together.
Merise adored her husband, Thomas and her two cats…Sydney and Samantha.
She later relocated to Clifton, NJ and became well involved with her bridge games, the College Woman’s Club and many other philanthropic organizations.
We will miss Merise organizing our groups functions and know her elegant parties are sure to continue.
