Obituary of Carolyn Earl Tierney

Carolyn Earl Tierney, 78 of Montclair died peacefully at her home in Sussex County “The Farm” on September 21, 2020 of ovarian cancer.  

She is predeceased by her husband Arthur, brother Charles Earl-wife Betty, sisters Alicia O’Hare-husband Jack and Frances Flanagan Earl.  She is survived by her oldest sister Mariana Strauch and youngest sister Michele Earl, her children Keith and Karen Tierney, Patrick and Lisa Tierney, Elizabeth (Liz) and Russell Kane and Adam and Nicole Tierney.  Grandchildren Molli, Shaylah, Luke, Keely, April, Cate Lyn, Lyndsey, Haley, Maggie and Abby and many beloved nieces and nephews and fantastic friends across the country. 

As her nickname “Sport” implies, she was an avid lover ofphysical activities.   Skiing in Colorado with family and friends, kayaking with the “Yakkers”, golfing and tennis in leagues, paddle tennis where she held the Executive Director Position of the APTA (American Platform Tennis Association) for 8 years and her most recent passion of PickleBall.  She recently built a PickleBall court at her home in Sussex where she always encouraged and mentored play.  

She traveled the world over, loving time spent in Ireland, Japan, Italy and to all 4 major tennis tournaments-the US & The French Opens, Wimbledon and most recently the Australian Open.  

As the Matriarch of the family, she insisted on regular family get togethers which were never impeded by geographic distances, covid-19 or her illness.  Family was her life and she was ours;she will be forever missed.  

Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 32 North Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042 on Thursday, September 24 from 3:00 pm-8:00 pm.  Funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, September 25 at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair.
