Devoted Mother, Beloved Grandmother and Cherished Great Grandmother
Muriel Fernald McHugh 93, of Crane’s Mill West Caldwell passed away peacefully at home on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018.
Visitation will take place at the Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park Street, Montclair on Sunday, April 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. on April 9 at Immaculate Conception Church, Montclair, New Jersey.
She was born on December 5, 1924 in Natick, MA.to Ralph and Honora Fernald. As a teenager, Muriel moved to Montclair and was raised by her father and stepmother Catherine Fernald, graduating from Montclair HS in 1942.
She married Philip McHugh in 1949, residing in Montclair for 54 years where they raised 10 children.
Muriel was active in her church and community. She was a Girl Scout troop leader for many years, a Montessori teacher, and a Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception parish.
She especially enjoyed vacations in New England with her husband and family and enjoyed visits with her 10 children, 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Muriel is survived by her 9 children:
Noreen and Wally Duszynski of Hyattsville, MD, Mary and Richard Knapp of Ridgeview, WV, Philip DVM and Christine McHugh of Durham, NC, Laurie and James Cassidy, of Sayreville, NJ, Thomas and Joanne McHugh of Cranford, NJ, Terry and Bob Dmytriw of Cedar Grove, NJ , Christopher and Christine McHugh of Feeding Hills, MA, James and Patricia McHugh of Glen Rock, NJ, and Carol and Mike Szalus of Middlesex, NJ.
18 grandchildren, Richard, Jeremy and Justin Knapp, Kelly, Megan, Sean McHugh, Erin Ruple, Shani Sasso, Hannah McHugh, Christopher, Brian and Michael Dmytriw, Kimberly and Timothy McHugh, Colin and Quinn McHugh, Emily and Andrew Szalus.
11 great grandchildren, Richie, Cosi, Ethan, Mairin, Haley, Lauren, Carter, Shanna, Allisen, Bryce and Vivienna and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Philip, her youngest daughter, Eileen McHugh Levicky, DVM, (husband Brian Levicky) and her sister Maxine Fahy.
She was loved by all, and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
