Obituary of Andrea Machernis

Andrea Mary Machernis (nee Zitman) 53, of Montclair, NJ peacefully passed away at her home May 26, 2013 after a brave and courageous 3 ½ year long campaign against cancer. She is survived by her loving husband Michael and cherished son Mikey. She was born in Georgetown, Guyana and is predeceased by her parents Ivan and Bernice Zitman. In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by eight sisters and five brothers as well as many nieces and nephews. Andrea graduated from Georgetown's Saint Rose's High School in 1977 and pursued additional studies in fashion and design after moving with her family to New York in 1981. She was employed at TIAA-CREF for 15 years before deciding to follow her dreams and true passion to start Zitman Interiors, a successful interior design business. Andrea was beloved by all for her warmth, compassion and love of life. Always helpful and understanding of those less fortunate, Andrea brought sunshine into the day of each person she encountered. While her son Mikey was her true heartfelt joy, she deeply loved horseback riding, the arts and music, especially playing her guitar, singing and dancing with her friends and family.
