Obituary of Barbara Borek

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Barbara Borek passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023, with her family lovingly by her side.

Born November 4, 1939, to John and Janet Hughes of Montclair, she attended Immaculate Conception High School where she led cheerleaders and became Queen of her prom. Her boundless energy came in handy, almost single-handedly raising four daughters aged within six years of each other.

With 52 years of nursing amongst her accomplishments, the family wishes to measure her time more in quality than years. Her pride of hosting large family dinners showed her social spirit. Her corned beef was always a highlight. Her drives as a soccer mom to her daughters’ away games showed off her sporting pride — we’ll note her devotion for the Philadelphia Eagles. Her dedication toward her children and looking forward to her firstborn’s nightly calls displayed her constant sense of motherhood. Her open arms, wrapped around her grandchildren gave her purpose as a mom’s mom. Her green thumb with heirloom tomatoes, fig trees, and most notably her rose bushes provided the taste and beauty of her nurturing. Her decades of book club time combined her passion for reading with her love of her friends, travel, storytelling, and of course….  a little wine and cheese.

Cheers to Barbara, Bobbie, Barb, Friend, Sister, Mom, Gram.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Borek, in 1988 and her brother John in June 2023. She is survived by her daughters Catherine Borek, Carolyn Borek Artale, Jennifer Borek Hicks (Michael Hicks), and Joanne Borek (Peter Bradley Seckinger); her siblings Karen Turro, Nancy Hudac (Dave Hudac), and Rick Hughes; and her grandchildren Nicolas Artale, Julian Artale, Camilla Bradley Mosca, Thomas Seckinger, and the bright light of Barbara’s last years, young Maya Hicks.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Barbara’s name to the Immaculate Conception High School Writing Lab, to be dedicated in her name while continuing her love of reading, writing, and literature.
