Sempre me lembro do Tio Paulo alegre, brincalhão, um tio muito divertido. Mesmo morando longe, sempre foi muito presente. Tenho boas lembranças de momentos muito especiais. Saudades!

Paulo and Cecília have been present in my life much longer than they have not been. Our lives have been entwined for the most part of it.
We spent many great moments together before we were married and then, after we both got married, we had great family time together.
Before I was married to Cecília’s brother, Carlos Eduardo, and Cecília and Paulo were recently married and had just moved to New Jersey, I visited them with the help of my wonderful US parents, Alfred and Doris Ianuzi. That was back in 1961, and Alfred and Doris took us sightseeing in NY city (photo below) and we had a great time observing the beatniks in Washington Square.
Time passed and then again in 1964, I still single, Cecília and Paulo parents of Christine and Patricia, I visited them again in New Jersey.
Almost ten years passed, and then again I was visiting them , this time married with Cecília’s brother, and already with two daughters and another on the way. This time we had the first of several wonderful Christmas together.
Then in 1983, Carlos and I moved to Potomac, MD, with the whole family and a dog. Where did we spend the first few days in the US before settling in MD? Of course with Cecília and Paulo, who opened their home and arms to us. Below there are photos of one of our invasions in Ridgewood.
We were lucky to be able to share many Christmas celebrations both in New Jersey and Potomac. We also were lucky to spend time together with Cecília and Paulo in Shipbottom at their beach house and in Porto de Galinhas, at our place.
As I said in the beginning, our lives have been entwined and I thank God for all the good times I spent with Paulo, a very special human being.

Lamentamos a sua partida! Mas, sempre nos lembraremos de sua passagem inesquecível em nossa família. E, de tantas vezes que nos proporcionou momentos de encontros saudosos. Descanse em paz!!!
Minha querida prima, nunca estamos preparados para nos despedir para sempre, mesmo sabendo que isso faz parte da vida. Neste momento, tenho certeza que apenas o amor de Deus conseguirá acalentar o seu coração. Estou orando por vocês.

PREPARANDO BATIDA DE CÔCO
Vou mencionar uma situação divertida ocorrida em minha minha vivência com o PAULO.
Ele estava no início do namoro com minha irmã MARIA CECÍLIA, já frequentava nossa casa, ainda que com certa cerimônia com meus pais.
Meu pai - JUVENAL - costumava fazer umas batidas de côco maravilhosas. Um dia, meu pai estava preparando a batida e o PAULO quiz aprender, colocando-se junto ao futuro sogro.
Meu pai, periodicamente, na medida em que adicionava os ingredientes, usava uma colher para provar o resultado. Com base nessa “prova”, meu pai adicionava o que julgava necessário: mais cachaça, ou mais leite de côco, ou mais leite condensado.
Como meu pai não tinha uma receita específica com medidas definidas, a “prova” das colheradas permitia chegar ao maravilhoso resultado final.
Considerando o interesse do PAULO, meu pai deu outra colher para ele, para que também provasse.
O que meu pai não explicou era que ele não bebia. Ele colovava o conteúdo da colher na boca, sentia o paladar e cuspia. Lavava a colher e ajustava os ingredientes. Provava de novo.
O PAULO, sem perceber que meu pai não bebia e que apenas testava o sabor, foi tomando a batida em colheradas. Lavava a colher e tomava mais uma.
Bem ….. o fato é que antes da batida ficar pronta, o PAULO teve de ser levado para o sofá …….
Para nós foi divertido, mas não tenho ideia de como o PAULO se sentiu depois de passado o porre …..

Conheci o PAULO em São Paulo, em meados dos anos 1950, qdo me juntei ao Grupo Escoteiro que estava sendo criado pelo então CHEFE LUIZ BELTRAN RUANO, imigrante espanhol e uma das pessoas mais idealistas que eu conheci. O PAULO era o segundo chefe, e era tratado como CHEFE PAULO. Havia também o CHEFE ANTONIO, menos aberto, pouco simpático e que logo se desligou do grupo. O PAULO também tinha a maior admiração pelo CHEFE LUIZ.
A “pequena distância” entre os escoteiros e os chefes foi “encurtada” rapidamente, graças à cordialidade entre todos nós e o entusiasmo que nos unia.
Depois de algumas reuniões iniciais na casa de outro escoteiro de nome VITOR BOCATTO, o chefe LUIZ conseguiu que o CLUBE IPÊ cedesse uma pequena sala e um enorme terraço, ambos anexos a um belo terreno baldio onde nos reuníamos e fazíamos nossos jogos, reuniões, etc.. Foi no CLUBE IPÊ que o GRUPO ESCOTEIRO GUIA LOPES se consolidou e toda nossa amizade se solidificou.
Muito em breve foi criada também a TROPA DE LOBINHOS e minha irmã MARIA CECÍLIA assumiu a chefia.
Creio que foi por aí que o cupido flexou os dois - PAULO e CECÍLIA - e, a partir dai, todos sabemos as consequências: namoro, noivado, casamento, mudança do Brasil para os Estados Unidos, filhas e tudo mais.
Dos tempos de escoteiro sob o CHEFE PAULO, guardo as melhores memórias de minha infância e pré-adolescência: Os ACAMPAMENTOS, os “FOGOS DE CONSELHO”, os jogos inteligentes. São memórias inesquecíveis.
O GRUPO ESCOTEIRO GUIA LOPES era constituido por quatro PATRULHAS com oito escoteiros cada., lideradas por um MONITOR.
Eu era o MONITOR da PATRULHA ÁGUIA e o DICK, irmão do PAULO, era MONITOR da PATRULA BÚFALO. Confesso que não me lembro os nomes das outras duas PATRULHAS, mas todas tinham nomes de animais.
Cada PATRULHA tinha o seu chamado “CANTO DE GUERRA”, usado como saudação mas, seguramente, o da PATRULHA BÚFALO sempre foi o mais destacado. Não sei onde o DICK o encontrou ou se ele mesmo criou, pois era uma cara cheio de ideias diferentes.
O fato é que o PAULO, em vários dos nossos encontros ao longo dos anos, sempre pedia para eu repetir a saudação para ele.

Q: What was Paulo really good at?
A: Paulo liked to collect stamps very much. He gave me a commemorative set of stamps from the United States Postal Service from the year 1981. I loved them and kept them to this day. I also remember his big glasses and smile at a barbucue party in Guarujá, which is a city bathed by the sea near Sao Paulo. Also remember that Paulo got stranded in Australia once and that a farewell party was celebrated after he retired from International Paper. Heard that he and Cecilia took a cruise around Alaska after retirement.

Tio Lost Paul,
From our adventures of getting lost whenever you were behind the wheel, to the fun times we shared in Ship Bottom (especially when we laughed as you struggled with the wind blowing your hair straight up), to tagging along with you and Tia Cecília on your move to Memphis, to going bike shopping, to finding out you were upset at the postman who lost the package I sent you (not knowing it was a box of feijoada to prank you)—along with everything else in between—you have always been my favorite and most fun-loving uncle. Paulo was a very dear person to my mother and me. An honest, happy, opinionated man who, every time he could come to Brazil, made a point of joining his family. He loved seeing the tables full of relatives, who often only saw each other at that opportunity organized by Chef Paulo and Cecília, dear cousins who lived far away. A true gentleman, a person we will miss, even if he lived in another country, was always present in our lives. May God receive him with pomp and circumstances, full of the love he planted here on planet Earth. We will miss him. Love Edna
