Obituary of Dorothy A Smith
Beloved Wife, Mother, and Grandmother
Dorothy Ann Smith, née McMahon, 83, peacefully passed away on January 21, 2025, at Applewood Village in Freehold, NJ. She was the dearly loved wife of Matthew M. Smith (60 Years) and Mother to Matthew J., Ellen and Daniel.
Born in Montclair, NJ, to James J. and Dorothy McMahon, she graduated from Immaculate Conception Grammar School, Mt. St. Dominic Academy and Caldwell College. Dorothy and Matthew married at Immaculate Conception Church in July of 1964, raised their children in West Orange, and enjoyed summers in Normandy Beach, NJ. Dorothy lived a life full of love and dedication to her family and the many children she taught at Our Lady of the Valley (Orange), St. Virgil’s (Morris Plains) and St. Margaret’s (Morristown). She loved teaching history, and politics. A type one Diabetic from the age of eleven, she lived a long energetic life through the help and dedication of her family.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Matthew of 60 years and children: Matthew J. and his partner Maria Drake, Ellen Mulligan and her husband Robert, and Daniel and his wife Kathleen. She was a devoted grandmother to Brian, Jenny, Megan, Madeline, Kelly, and Robert.
She is also survived by her brothers James McMahon, Michael McMahon, and her sister Kathleen Tully, and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, James and Dorothy McMahon, and her sister, Ellen Marie McMahon, OP.
Dorothy’s memory will be forever cherished by her family and friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for those she held dear. A mass of Christian burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 30 North Fullerton Street, Montclair, NJ, on Saturday, February 1, at 11:00 am with visitation beforehand in the church from 10:00-11:00 am. Burial will follow immediately after mass at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, 712 Grove Street, Montclair, NJ.
