Obituary of Gail M Dean

Gail McDermott Dean of West Caldwell NJ passed away on Sunday April 2, 2023.  She was 84 years old.

The daughter of Arthur J. McDermott and Adelaide (Lougheed) McDermott, Gail is a 3rd generation Montclairian.  Like her father and his father, she was born and raised in Montclair. 

A 1956 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Gail went on to earn a AA Degree in Business from Caldwell College graduating in 1958.    

Shortly after her graduation, she was hired by the Montclair Times Newspaper as a Copy Editor.  In 1972 she was hired by Reitman Industries to work as a Sales Representative for Galsworthy, Inc.  She was the First Female hired in this position in the State of New Jersey to sell wholesale wine & liquor.  Her clients were restaurants, bars and nightclubs. She was the recipient of many contests while working in this line of work.  In later years, she was employed by the Employment Journal, a classified newspaper where she excelled on every level and was able to save up enough for a comfortable retirement.    

Gail settled in Caldwell where she raised her 2 sons on a single income.  A struggle it was but always found time to get to her sons’ athletic games after her workday.  Summers were spent at the Jersey Shore.  Point Pleasant was one of her favorites.  Several times she rented a house for her family for a whole month.  Some years were filled with day trips.  Always providing for her family as much as she could.      

Gail is survived by her 2 sons, Edward Jr and his wife Kim of River Vale, NJ and Kevin and his wife Candie of Parsippany.  She was the proud Nana to Raeanne and Jillian of NYC and Thomas of River Vale.  Her Sister-In-Law, Mary (Keenan) McDermott.  She was Pre-Deceased by her brother, Arthur E. McDermott of Roseland, NJ

Visitation will be held at the Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park Street Montclair, NJ on Tuesday April 4th from 3-7PM.   A 10am Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Wednesday April 5th at Immaculate Conception Church in Montclair NJ.
