Obituary of John McDonough SR

John Clinton McDonough, Sr. of Roseland died on November 20, 2010. Mr. Mc Donough was born and raised in South Orange, NJ. He was a resident of Essex Fells for more than 40 years before moving to Roseland 15 years ago. He attended Seton Hall Prep and graduated from Colgate University. At Colgate he was winner of numerous inter-collegiate medals for swimming and was a lifeguard at Sea Girt Beach for many years. During World War II he served as First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. John was President of R. A. McDonough Co.; Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company's oldest continuous family owned dealership for 98 years, which operated auto and truck centers in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Bermuda. He won numerous awards, such as the "Goodyear Circle of Excellence". John was a co-founder of AirTreads, Inc., the countries first and largest maker of air craft retread tires and Director of the National Tires Retreaders Association. He was a lifetime member of Local #825 Operating Engineers. John was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Newark Executive's Association. He was also an Honorary Professor at Babson College, Wellesley, Mass., lecturing in "Entrepreneurship." He was appointed by Governor Byrne as Chairman of the New Jersey Legalized Games of Chance Control Commission. John was also a long time member of the Essex Fells Country Club in New Jersey and the Coral Beach and Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland, NJ. John was predeceased by his daughter Mary Beth and his son John C. McDonough Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Peggy McDonough, his loving children Tim and Maria McDonough, Kevin and Cyndy McDonough; and his devoted grandchildren Delaney and Giovanni Lima, Jake, Lacey, Kevin, Laura and Clinton McDonough; and great-granddaughter Eliza. Funeral from the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park Street, Montclair on Wednesday at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament, 28 Livingston Avenue, Roseland, NJ at 10:30 am. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery 225 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, NJ. Visiting at the funeral home will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated in his memory to: Melmark, 2600 Wayland Road, Berwyn, PA 19312.
