Mildred Sharkey O’Brien, 85, of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, died on May 12th, 2016 of complications from Alzheimer’s. She is predeceased by a sister, Madeline Sharkey and a brother, Clifford Sharkey and survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter Patrick O’Brien, two sisters Veronica O’Connell and Joan Carville [Gerald], seven children; Elizabeth and her husband, Robert Flanagan, of Bethesda, MD, Walter P. O’Brien, Jr. and his wife, Linda Jaye Molee, of Freehold, NJ, Gerard and his wife, Melinda, of Easton, CT, Sheila Leigh and her husband, Peter Flanagan, of Chevy Chase, MD , Paul and his wife, Mary of Madison New Jersey, Marie Seton of Manhattan, NY and Sarah and her husband, Jeffrey Boyd, of Wilmette, Illinois, as well as seventeen grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Cassian’s Church or Alzheimer’s Disease Research [Clarksburg, MD]. Milly, as she was known, was a lifelong resident of Upper Montclair, a graduate of Montclair High School and the Berkeley School and a lifelong parishioner of St. Cassian’s Catholic Church in Upper Montclair where she and Walter were married. Milly was a loving wife and Mother. Along with being an active parishioner she volunteered countless hours to numerous organizations and was an active supporter of all of her children’s sports teams. Even as her children grew she did not sit on the sidelines but cheered her grandchildren as well as sea kayaked, skied and tobogganed in Brookdale Park into her early 70s. Milly loved Montclair, the Rose Garden and its many parks. She was a member of the Mercier Club, Glen Ridge Country Club, and an avid tennis player. While she loved spending time with her many friends in Montclair she was happiest at the beach, travelling with her husband and watching fireworks. Milly was a true blue Mountie and her presence will be sorely missed by her family and the community.
