Maurice J. Stack of Verona, New Jersey passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at home. He was 83 years of age. Maurice was born in Hoboken, N .J. on September 30, 1927 to Edward M. and Marguerite Gautier Stack, the first of their five children. He was educated in the public school system in Hoboken, and graduated from Demarest High School in 1946. In the fall of that year, He joined the United States Army and was sent to Korea with the 53rd Field Artillery battalion, 6th Infantry Division. After he returned home, he went into the insurance business with his father, and his uncle, William J. Stack who were partners in the firm of Stack & Stack, Inc. He remained with the firm for more than 50 years as a licensed Independent Insurance Agent. He was partners with his brother, William J. Stack, ll, who led the Real Estate Appraisal portion of the firm until his death in 2010. In 2004, Maurice retired, and hoped to travel and spend more time with his grandchildren. He was very active with the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA, serving on the Board of Directors for many years as well as with the Kiwanis Club of Hoboken, The American Red Cross, The American Legion Post 185, Caldwell, NJ, and many other service organizations. A longtime member of the Essex Fells Country Club, he served as the Activities Chairman on their Board of Directors. Moe loved his golf, and his favorite weekend foursome. He loved a joke, to share stories of his beloved Hoboken, and to spend time with his friends, and loved to show everyone how to tie a bow tie - correctly. On September 30, 1987, he retired from NJARNG, 1st Battalion, 113th Infantry, 50th Armored Division with the rank of Sergeant Major (E9) after 20 years of service to his county. Maurice is survived by his wife of 49 year, Helen Courtney Stack, and his children, Marguerite E. DeMaio and husband, Richard of Livingston, Helen T. Fano, and husband, Thomas of West Caldwell, and Jennifer G. Stack of Verona , grandchildren, Edward M. and Andrew Stack, Ryann and Richard DeMaio, Vincent and Michael Fano. Maurice was predeceased by his sons, Edward Maurice and William Joseph Stack. He leaves behind his sisters, Teresa Pflugh of Blairstown, NJ, Margaret Coolahan and husband, James, of Little Silver, and Mary Gaspar and husband, George, of Verona He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Maureen MacAleer Stack of Monnmouth Beach, and Natalie Devlin and husband Edward of Matawan, NJ and many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home 76 Park Street Montclair on Thursday at 9 AM. Then to Our Lady of the Lake Church, 32 Lakeside Avenue Verona, where at 10 AM a mass of Christian burial will offered. Interment Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Viewing 3-7 on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001) or to the Wounded Warrior Project (4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville, FL 32256).
